Shaukat Nawaz Mir… Will the Voices of Peace Also Be Silenced?
By Khawaja Kabir Ahmed
The greatest asset of any society is those who refuse to abandon patience in moments of anger, who choose restraint, tolerance, and peace even in times of heightened tension. Such individuals are a blessing to their nations, not a threat.
Shaukat Nawaz Mir, a senior leader of the Joint Awami Action Committee, is regarded by his colleagues as one of those personalities who, over the past three years, has led the people’s rights movement with remarkable patience, discipline, and a firm commitment to peaceful means. At every critical moment, he encouraged supporters to remain calm and consistently discouraged any form of violence or extremism.
He has now been arrested. During his arrest, security forces reportedly opened unusually heavy fire, after which he was taken to an undisclosed location. His family and colleagues have not been provided with clear information regarding his whereabouts. This is not merely the arrest of an individual; it raises serious questions that deserve answers from the state.
Governments must understand that sidelining peaceful leadership has never produced lasting peace. When those who exercise restraint and keep emotions under control are removed from the scene, those who follow may not possess the same patience or moderation. It is a reality that weakening moderate voices does not reduce tensions , it often intensifies them. Any action that creates fear, uncertainty, or the perception of retaliation among the public ultimately undermines trust in society.
The Government of Pakistan, the relevant institutions, and the Government of Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir should recognize the gravity of the situation. Those who advocate peace should not be treated as enemies. Differences of opinion should be addressed through dialogue rather than force. This is the path that best serves the dignity of the state, the confidence of the people, and lasting peace in the region.
The public, too, should uphold the legacy of their leaders, who have consistently preached patience, discipline, and peaceful struggle. If they are arrested or subjected to any other hardship, their message should not be forgotten. Continue your struggle for your rights within the framework of law, order, and peaceful means. Remember your martyrs, and pursue your goals through unity, patience, and steadfast determination.
The true strength of nations lies not in weapons, but in the courage, awareness, and unity of their people. It is hoped that the situation will not deteriorate to a point where confrontation replaces dialogue. The need of the hour is for restraint, wisdom, and patience to be demonstrated by all .
